Honestly, I am really happy with the progress of ANW.īack in Seasons 1-3, it was all about speed and a 'good' run was only 45 seconds long. My first season watching was ANW3 going into Sasuke 27. Treat it less like the talent show genre, avoid the reality show elements pursued in the past, and treat it more like a sport and a game show. We don't want to see manufactured personas we want to see human beings. It seems to be trying so hard to be this sterile, delicately packaged product carefully calculated to appeal to certain demographics as much as possible, but in superficial ways. It just needs to re-discover the humanity it had when the show was low budget.
The obstacles are clever, especially in the new seasons. If, in addition to the extraordinary athletes, the show could audition for colorful characters there expressly to provide comedy in their failures, it would add a whole other dimension that the show is currently lacking.Īside from these elements, I love the show. This gives your show a narrative and makes the successes of the stars all that more extraordinary.
Not only can this provide a sort of slapstick comedy, it sets the tone for just how difficult these challenges are. Part of the fun of an obstacle course show is watching people wipe out in unexpected ways. Recent seasons of ANW miss out on a lot of potential comedy. This will all also help with the show's pacing, which is currently jarring. Also, if you go the interview route, do so with an interviewer who seems to actually enjoy talking to the athletes (like Alison Haislip did), not someone who acts like the competitors are beneath her and she's annoyed to do her job. Show us their humanity, not their carefully constructed audition tapes that you've edited into sterile flawless products with heart-wrenching music and "tough guy I'm so determined" poses. If you want us to get to know and love these athletes, show us more of their comradery and reactions to each other's runs, or maybe some more post-run interviews. We're interested in seeing this person fight against the overwhelming odds that are the course, not in hearing how beating these obstacles will somehow have meaning in curing their dad's cancer. Biopics are fine, but they should serve only to introduce us to the athletes, not to convince us of why their run is important. Recent seasons of ANW seem to be trying to manufacture drama when it's not necessary. Earlier seasons are better than more recent seasons.
